We’re just back from Nottingham, for the New Adventures in Web Design Conference. One of the speakers we really wanted to see was Trent Walton. If you’re not familiar with Trent, his personal blog is a great showcase of both fonts and responsive design. He’s also well-known for his work for Lost World’s Fair, a website to show the capabilities of fonts and CSS3, working together with great designers like Jason Santa Maria and Frank Chimero.

To improve you have to break rules.

Trent pushed the possibilities of web design. In his great talk he explained how: to improve you have to break rules.

Pure CSS3 used for amazing titles

This accounts especially for the work he has done with fonts. To create these layouts, Trent had to add html, like loads of <spans> and classes to every character. To make this process easier, they created Lettering.js, a script that injects spans with classes around the characters. So you get something likeT HIS!. Semantic and codewise it’s crappy, but Trent’s tip: don’t think about compatibility but about what you want.

That might not be preferable, but because of examples like this, CSS3 changes like ::nth (to select child elements) get proposed or implemented faster. Pushing possibilities on the web forward.

Responsive Web Design

Trent also had his struggles with Responsive Web Design. According to Trent this is difficult to learn because it isn’t bolt-on, a new CSS3 trick can be implemented in projects, but to build responsive websites, you’ll have to completely change the way you work and think. From the start. And when going responsive, the flexible grids, fluid images and media queries are the ‘easiest part’. The difficult part: “can fine control of web type coexist with responsive web design?”.

FitText

In web design, we choose the size of fonts and placement of elements, to correspond with what we want to communicate. With responsive design, this is difficult because because you have several states. One website feels like 1000 PSD’s instead of one. “To think about the web responsively is to think in proportions instead of pixels”. To make text and video scalable, Trent’s company created FitText.js and FitVids.js.

To help you even more: Erskine Design, who also organised a great bowling event at Naconf, just launched Gridpak, a Responsive Grid generator. Elliot Jay Stocks tweeted after the event that he created a Photoshop grid for responsive web design.

This post was published on the Mangrove blog.

Noorderslag Interactive 2012

Just came back from an inspiring first Noorderslag Interactive. Definitely hope that the event will grow larger next year, in addition to the (awesome) Eurosonic Noorderslag music festival.

My favorite quotes and cases of the day:

Interactive Pigs

Can our ideas about meat and animal welfare change when it becomes personal? Kars Alfrink, a Dutch game designer, showed us his concept of an iPad app that let’s you contact pigs in a stall. Eh, well, just check out the demo:

Playing with Pigs: Pig Chase from Utrecht School of the Arts on Vimeo.

Quotes

“Your audience expects to be part of the creative process.”
Biggest trend in Interactive according to Shawn O’Keefe, festival director SXSW interactive.

“We had over 11 billion scrobbles, that’s over 71.596 years of music, in one year time.”
Last.fm’s Matt Sheret wants to learn from this kind of behaviour.

Catalogtree

Two years ago trading computers went berserk and started selling stock until stoxk exchanges where forced to close. 800 billion was lost in less than 10 minutes (but quickly recovered because they sold to low). Catalogtree and VPRO made an iPad documentary with interactive infographics to show how extraordinary the crash was.

more about the project

Momkai

Harald Dunnink showed a lot of great cases and explained their choices in the process. Their Open Loops project for artist Pete Philly was a great case for a music + interactive festival.

I also participated in a very good ‘Scrum for the music industry’ workshop from Fabrique and had the chance to see a lot of great bands. Alamo Race Track in a church is certainly something I can recommend. Conclusion: Let’s hope the event grows in the next few years.

Another Google initiative to track the elections using Google...

Another Google initiative to track the elections using Google Trend. Searches for Santorum are sky-rocketing in recent days. But Santorum is probably the only one not happy with that, because it is not not only a result of his Iowa election success.

First, go grab some headphones. The best ones you’ve got. If the best ones you’ve got are these suckers (or something similar), you should really go buy new ones, but use the best you’ve got for right now.

Take a break from whatever you’re doing for 2 minutes and listen, but just listen to the whole thing, even if you have to multi-task.

Headphones on? Ok. Good.

Now, press play.

But he also managed to pass Rebecca Black with most dislikes on Youtube.

Nice use of statistics by Youtube. Check it out at youtube.com/politics. So I’m glad Daan van Dijk came up with TreinBingo! for the iPhone to keep commuters busy while waiting for the train to arrive/move.

Download TreinBingo!

And I gotta have this for Stopwoordenbingo too! (Dutch for filler talk).
