Last week I posted about Thomas Suarez, a 12 year old iPhone app developer at TEDxManhattan. But it’s good to see that we have young iOS developers in The Netherlands too. Starting with Puck Meerburg, age 11, talking about developing for iPhone at TEDxYouth@Amsterdam (in Dutch). Including a quiz iPad app that you can control with multiple iPhones… Follow his blog/releases on Puckipedia.
Interesting part: he started because he owned an iPod Touch. Lot’s of people call the iPod Touch the first step to an iPhone, but a apparently it’s a nice step to iOS app development too ;-)

A 12 year old iPhone developer talking at TEDx. I still have to figure out if I’m enthusiastic or scared like hell.
No, just joking. I’m more afraid that this boy is the exception. Programming, or actually anything technology-related, is seen as something that’s for the nerd kids. Kids learn to have business, management and language skills, but don’t get stimulated to influence technology. There will be a big need of good developers, user-interface experts and tech-driven designers in coming years. With jobs disappearing in other industries and a technology based society, I would definitely learn my kids how to code.
For all the iOS/mobile UI designers out there. Some great overview website to get inspiration when you’re working on a mobile app:
- PTTRNS, huge overview of iOS User interfaces.
- Mobile UI patterns, smaller but more specific.
